LONDON — Arsenal have moved to within touching distance of their first Premier League title in 22 years following a dramatic and highly contentious 1-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side appeared to have let their lead slip in stoppage time, only for a seismic VAR intervention to overturn a West Ham equaliser and keep the Gunners five points clear at the top of the table.
The ‘Defining Moment’
The match was deadlocked until the 83rd minute when Leandro Trossard’s deflected effort found the net to give Arsenal the lead. However, the game descended into chaos in the final moments.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya appeared to fumble a cross under pressure, allowing West Ham’s Callum Wilson to lash the ball home for what seemed to be a vital equaliser for the relegation-threatened hosts.
The goal was initially awarded, but celebrations were cut short as VAR official Darren England spotted a potential foul on Raya by Pablo. After a lengthy review at the pitch-side monitor, referee Chris Kavanagh disallowed the goal, ruling that the goalkeeper had been impeded.
The Title Equation
The result leaves Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City with just two games remaining. The Gunners’ path to their 14th league title—and first since the ‘Invincibles’ of 2004—is now clear:
- Scenario 1: If Manchester City fail to beat Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Arsenal can secure the title with a win over Burnley on 18 May.
- Scenario 2: If City win their game in hand, Arsenal will be crowned champions by winning their final two matches against Burnley and Crystal Palace.
Managers Divided
The decision has sparked a fierce debate over the role of technology in the game’s biggest moments.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised the officials for their “brave decision,” stating: “When you look at the action, it is an obvious error. It is a free-kick. Congratulations, because they made a big call in very difficult circumstances.”
West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo was left fuming, suggesting the inconsistency of VAR is damaging the sport. “Even the referees don’t know what is a foul and what isn’t,” he said. “It creates a lot of doubt and speculation.”
Relegation Despair for Hammers
While Arsenal eyes the trophy, the defeat is a “brutal blow” for West Ham. The Hammers remain in the bottom three, one point behind Tottenham. However, should Spurs beat Leeds on Monday, the gap to safety will widen to four points with only two games left to play, leaving West Ham’s Premier League status hanging by a thread.
