Media Union leader honoured for press freedom advocacy

Abuja, Nigeria – Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, has been recognized for her work in media leadership and advocacy, receiving a prestigious award from the UK-based School of Communications and Media Studies, Learn To Live Business School (LLBSUK).

The “Excellence in Media Leadership and Advocacy Award” was presented during the institution’s 2025 Post-Graduate Program awards ceremony, which celebrated graduating students from two cohorts. The event drew media scholars, practitioners, and families to Abuja for an atmosphere of professional fulfilment.

The award was handed over by Chief Emeka Mba, former Director General of Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), who praised Comrade Ike as a trailblazer whose work continues to influence national discourse.

Chief Mba noted that the recognition was for an individual who has demonstrated “exemplary leadership in advancing the values of ethical journalism, free expression and responsible media practice,” highlighting her years of unwavering defence of press freedom within the Nigerian media landscape.

In her response, Comrade Ike expressed her profound appreciation, describing the honour as a call to deepen her commitment to media transformation and nation-building.

“Strategic communication remains central to every sphere of human endeavour and to our national development. We must continue to refine how we tell our stories and how we engage the public,” she said.

Reaffirming her commitment to responsible journalism, she pledged to continue championing narratives that rebuild public confidence in the media, adding that the sector must remain a credible bridge between government, institutions, and citizens.

The ceremony also marked the official graduation of students, many of whom expressed excitement about entering higher professional roles equipped with advanced skills in communication strategy, media ethics, and development reporting—expertise that institutions like LLBSUK aim to use to strengthen the Nigerian media industry.
