Abuja, Nigeria – Abubakar Malami, who served as Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly confirmed that he has received an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mr. Malami, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), used his personal social media page on Friday to assure the Nigerian public that he is willing to appear before the anti-graft agency.
“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he wrote.
He stated that his decision to make the invitation public was an effort to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency, which he described as commitments he has long championed in public service.
Mr. Malami served as the nation’s chief law officer from 2015 to 2023. His tenure was marked by involvement in several complex legal and anti-corruption cases, including international asset recovery initiatives, and was often at the centre of contentious government decisions that attracted both domestic and international scrutiny.
In the latter period of his service, the former minister faced public allegations related to asset declarations and the management of recovered state funds—claims he consistently denied.
The EFCC, Nigeria’s foremost financial crimes body, has not yet released specific details regarding the nature or scope of the investigation for which the former Attorney-General has been invited. Mr. Malami stated he would keep the public informed as the events unfold.
