Parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, face temporary power cuts on Tuesday as engineers carry out routine maintenance on major high-voltage transmission lines, officials say.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that a four-hour maintenance outage has been scheduled for the Ikeja-West/Ejigbo 132kV Transmission Line 1 at the Ejigbo substation.
The work, scheduled between 10:00 and 14:00 local time (09:00–13:00 GMT), requires a parallel line to be switched off for worker safety, resulting in a temporary loss of around 40 megawatts (MW) of electricity capacity.
In a statement aimed at reassuring international travellers and business operators, the grid operator noted that critical power supplies to the nearby airport district have been rerouted via the Isolo transmission corridor to prevent major disruptions.
”The outage is necessary to enable TCN’s maintenance crew to carry out routine work,” the state-owned grid management company said in a statement, offering an apology to customers served by the local distributor, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
Power supply interruptions are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, where aging infrastructure and grid stability challenges frequently force grid operators to conduct emergency and scheduled repairs.
TCN said power is expected to be fully restored across affected residential and commercial areas in western Lagos immediately following the completion of the four-hour maintenance window.
