Nigeria’s INEC to hold major press conference as 2027 election countdown hits 100 days

Segun Ojumu, Abuja

Nigeria’s electoral body will host a national stakeholders’ meeting and press briefing on Tuesday to mark 100 days until the country’s 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will provide updates on key preparations, including voter registration, candidate nominations, and security logistics, the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola announced on Sunday. The event, taking place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in the capital, Abuja, will be led by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan. It comes as the commission seeks to address public confidence in the voting system ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested election cycle in Africa’s most populous nation.

Political party leaders, security heads, foreign diplomats, and civil society representatives are expected to attend the gathering, which will also be broadcast live across national media networks.

Election management in Nigeria has faced intense scrutiny in recent years over logistical challenges and digital transmission reliability. Commission officials said Tuesday’s briefing aims to demonstrate “absolute transparency” and reassure domestic and international observers of their readiness.
