TSF says ICC Mambilla ruling protects public funds, clears hurdle for 3,050MW power project

A civil society advocacy group, the Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF), says Nigeria’s victory in a multi-billion dollar arbitration over the Mambilla Hydropower Project protects public finances and paves the way for critical energy infrastructure expansion.

In a statement signed by Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Danjuma Sada, the group reacted to the recent International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) ruling in Paris, which dismissed claims brought against the Nigerian government by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited.

The ICC tribunal rejected Sunrise Power’s claims, which included a $2.35bn breach of contract demand and a separate $400m settlement claim, insulating the country from a total potential financial exposure of over $3.38bn.

The group noted that beyond avoiding a massive financial liability, the tribunal ordered the claimant to reimburse 75 per cent of Nigeria’s legal costs, effectively removing a two-decade legal bottleneck that had stalled the 3,050-megawatt hydroelectric plant in Taraba State.

The forum urged the federal government to build on the arbitration victory by accelerating subsequent development phases for Mambilla under strict commercial discipline and transparent contractual safeguards.
