The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that approximately 75 per cent of funds allocated by the Federal Government for Christian and Muslim pilgrimages were diverted by officials managing the programs.
Olukoyede made the disclosure in Abuja during a meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and the public launch of the anti-graft agency’s Anti-Corruption Interfaith Manual.
Describing the investigation findings as “mind-boggling,” the anti-corruption chief alleged that officials entrusted with managing public funds created private companies in destination countries for Nigerian pilgrims, resulting in severe conflicts of interest and widespread diversion of resources.
The EFCC boss warned that religious institutions must maintain internal financial integrity, urging clerics to refrain from mixing organizational tithes, offerings, or zakat with personal commercial ventures.
