Military forces in north-western Nigeria have rescued a group of traders who were abducted by armed gang members and arrested two suspects in a separate operation, officials say.
Troops operating under Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma launched a rescue mission after receiving an alert that a commercial vehicle carrying local traders had been intercepted along the Funtua–Faskari road in Katsina State. According to military sources, the attackers forced the passengers out of the vehicle and marched them into the nearby bush. Arriving troops pursued the assailants and engaged them in a firefight, forcing the gunmen to flee deep into the forest and abandon the hostages.
The rescued traders were uninjured and were subsequently escorted back to Sheme Market to rejoin their families and local communities.
In a separate intelligence-led operation in the Dutsin-Ma local government area, troops working alongside the Nigeria Police Force intercepted a stolen gold-coloured Toyota Corolla along the Katsina–Dutsin-Ma highway. Two men, identified as Abdulmalik Haruna, 28, and Mohammed Kabir, 44, were arrested at the scene. Both suspects and the recovered vehicle have been transferred to the police division in Dutsin-Ma for further investigation and prosecution.
