More than 4,000 Nigerian nationals residing illegally in India have taken advantage of a government amnesty programme to leave the country voluntarily without penalty, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to India, Saidu Muhammad, has revealed.
Speaking to journalists covering the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Mr. Muhammad praised Indian authorities for extending the initial six-month amnesty window by an additional three months following his arrival in late July.
The Nigerian mission has requested a further extension of three to six months to allow more undocumented citizens to either regularize their status or return home safely.
The announcement came as the envoy reviewed his first month in office, during which he formally presented his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu.
Mr. Muhammad said his early engagements focused on diaspora welfare, resolving visa overstay challenges, and advancing economic ties between the two nations.
Bilateral discussions centered on key sectors for mutual investment, including pharmaceuticals, healthcare, mining, manufacturing, and renewable energy.
“We are seeking greater access for Nigerian businesses in India while encouraging Indian investors to expand operations in Nigeria,” Mr. Muhammad said, reiterating his commitment to economic diplomacy and protecting Nigerian citizens abroad.
