A civil society group has called on journalists and activists to build a united front to defend electoral integrity, counter disinformation, and resist the shrinking of civic space in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop in Kano on Wednesday, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, Executive Director of the Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED), warned that political violence, disinformation, and intimidation continue to threaten the nation’s democratic foundations.
“Electoral integrity is under pressure. Civic space is shrinking. Disinformation is poisoning public trust,” Mr Zikirullahi told participants at the event, which brings together journalists and civil society leaders.
He urged the media and rights groups to reject fear and collaboration with powerful interests seeking to divide citizens, emphasizing that a strong partnership between journalists and activists is essential to holding leaders accountable.
The workshop, funded by the German organization Misereor KZE and held at the CHRICED headquarters in Kano, focuses on equipping participants with strategies to counter fake news, report ethically, and protect civil liberties ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
