Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has issued a public apology to Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies following controversial comments he made at a national legal conference.
Speaking in a video shared on Friday, Otse expressed regret over remarks delivered at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, where he described personnel of the military, police, customs, and immigration services as “unknown gunmen” while discussing national insecurity.
Otse admitted that his speech was unfair, particularly to frontline soldiers risking their lives fighting Boko Haram and other armed groups in remote areas.
Aimed at ‘bad eggs’, not fallen heroes
The activist clarified that he intended to highlight corruption, insider sabotage, and information leaks within the security sector, rather than to disparage entire institutions or generalize against all personnel.
“My speech was not to discourage you; it was entirely to talk about the bad eggs in our security forces,” Otse said. “It seems like I was generalizing, and it’s not fair to the fallen soldiers and the families of these heroes.”
Otse formally extended his apologies to the Chief of Defence Staff, military leadership, the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, and Nigeria Immigration Service.
He urged patriotic officers to remain steadfast in their duties while reiterating his warning that personnel involved in sabotaging security operations or aiding criminal networks would eventually face justice.
The apology follows widespread public backlash and criticism from senior legal figures regarding his appearance and presentation at the NBA conference.
