A political support group, The Democratic Front (TDF), has praised Nigerian state governors for backing the shift towards Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), describing their commitment as a direct outcome of President Bola Tinubu’s advocacy for lower public transport costs.
In a joint statement by Chairman Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Wale Adedayo, the group said the consensus among state leaders demonstrates growing collaboration between federal and regional authorities to ease energy and transit costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy in August 2023.
TDF highlighted the expansion of CNG infrastructure since the launch of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), noting that the network now includes over 90 certified refueling stations and more than 450 conversion centres across 23 states.
Expanding clean energy transit
According to the group, over 120,000 vehicles have been converted to run on CNG, with commercial transport operators in major urban hubs—including Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and Enugu—increasingly adopting the cheaper fuel alternative. Heavy-duty interstate transporters are also gradually transitioning from diesel to gas.
“The collective decision by state governors to explore CNG validates President Tinubu’s position that the solution to high transportation costs lies in developing cheaper alternatives like CNG and electric vehicles, rather than returning to an unsustainable subsidy regime,” the group stated.
TDF welcomed the setup of a joint federal-state implementation committee expected to roll out coordinated transport cost-reduction measures starting on 1 October, urging the public to support the transition to accelerate access to affordable energy.
