Nigeria has proposed establishing a joint working group on humanitarian affairs with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address ongoing insecurity and displacement across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regions.
The proposal was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed, during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday with the OIC’s Assistant Secretary-General, Tarig Bakheet.
Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in areas including youth empowerment, healthcare, vocational training, and counter-extremism initiatives.
During the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed called for broader cultural exchange initiatives across member states. At the same time, Bakheet encouraged Nigeria to host the upcoming OIC Social Development Conference and invited greater Nigerian representation within the organisation’s management.
The ministry confirmed that Nigeria will attend the next OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meeting, scheduled for 27 August in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where member states are expected to elect a new secretary-general.
