The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hulayat Omidiran, has urged Nigeria’s Super Falcons to put their recent WAFCON exit behind them and focus on securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The national team faces South Africa on Thursday in a critical playoff match, following a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which ended their title defence.
Omidiran, a former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive board member, urged the squad to remain united and maintain their focus despite the continental setback.
“As difficult as the WAFCON exit may be, this is not the time to lose hope,” Omidiran said in a statement released on Wednesday. “Champions are defined by how they respond to setbacks. The Super Falcons must pick themselves up, remain united and fight for the opportunity that lies ahead.”
A victory against South Africa would advance Nigeria to the inter-confederation playoff tournament, where teams will compete for the final qualification slots for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
