Troops from the Nigerian Army have rescued nine commuters abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Ajaokuta–Itobe Road in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Responding to reports of an attack on commuters, soldiers from Patrol Base Itobe arrived at the scene to find a Toyota Hiace bus and a Toyota Sienna vehicle abandoned by the roadside.
Troops immediately initiated a pursuit, tracking the suspects toward the outskirts of Adumu Community in neighbouring Dekina Local Government Area.
According to a military statement released on Tuesday, soldiers engaged the kidnappers in a gunbattle, forcing them to abandon their captives and flee into the surrounding bush with suspected gunshot wounds.
The rescued victims—comprising two elderly men, two elderly women, four adult males, and an infant—were evacuated to safety and handed over to the Nigeria Police, Itobe Area Command, for processing and family reunification.
Military authorities stated that search-and-rescue operations remain ongoing in the area to locate any remaining hostages and track down the fleeing suspects.
