Nigerian military forces have recovered and exhumed the remains of a local community leader who was murdered and buried in a shallow grave by a suspected criminal gang in Imo State, south-eastern Nigeria.
Troops operating under Operation UDO KA discovered the grave of Chief Ibe Anyadu in the Umudike Forest on Sunday following confessions from suspects arrested during recent security raids.
The suspects, who were initially apprehended in connection with the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the theft of service weapons, led soldiers directly to the burial site within one of their hideouts.
Exhumation and prosecution promises
The exhumation was carried out in the presence of family members, local vigilantes, and representatives from the Aggah and Umudike communities. The family provided a coffin and ambulance to convey the remains for a traditional burial.
Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, offered condolences to the victim’s family and assured the community that those responsible would face prosecution.
Military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni stated on Monday that security forces remain committed to dismantling criminal networks and restoring stability across the region.
