A group of Nigerian women who were detained at an airport in Mauritius have been released and are travelling to Nairobi, according to Nigeria’s diaspora agency.
The release by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) follows widespread public outcry after a video surfaced online showing the women held at the airport terminal.
The footage, circulated widely on social media since Sunday, sparked calls for official government intervention, with reports indicating the group had been detained at the airport since July 31.
Diplomatic intervention
In a statement issued on Monday, NiDCOM confirmed the women were no longer in custody and were en route to the Kenyan capital.
“The Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is actively engaging the relevant Nigerian Embassy, who have formally taken up this matter with the authorities of the country concerned, to ensure full accountability and prevent any recurrence,” the statement read.
NiDCOM did not disclose the identities of the women, the specific reasons for their detention, or their eventual travel schedule back to Nigeria.
Neither the Mauritian government nor airport authorities have issued an official statement regarding the cause of the delay or detention.
