The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has declared the commission fully prepared for the August 15 Osun State governorship election following a successful mock voter accreditation exercise on Saturday.
Speaking to journalists during an inspection tour across Obokun, Egbedore, and Osogbo local government areas, Amupitan confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines performed optimally across evaluated polling units.
Addressing an initial technical glitch encountered with older Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), the INEC chief stated that the commission’s ICT department had permanently resolved the synchronization issue.
“My assessment so far is that we are happy that the machines are working ahead of the election,” Amupitan said. “The initial problem had to do with the old cards, but that problem is solved for good. I am quite confident that every voter in line will experience a seamless process.”
Enhanced security and digital measures
Ahead of the August 15 vote, the commission highlighted several technological and operational safeguards designed to protect the integrity of the ballot:
- Stolen PVC Safeguards: Following recent card thefts in Osun, INEC disabled affected PVCs and introduced specialized downloadable digital replacements for verified voters.
- IReV Result Verification: The INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal has been configured to automatically reject uploaded result sheets that show mathematical discrepancies or fail reconciliation checks.
- Logistics & Registry Review: The commission’s voter registry directorate has been instructed to document all minor operational gaps observed during Saturday’s exercise to ensure full resolution before election day.
