The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, on Friday extended his readiness assessment tour to Obokun Local Government Area to evaluate operational preparations ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
During the inspection of non-sensitive materials at the Obokun office, the Electoral Officer, Mrs. Fakunle Olajumoke, assured the INEC delegation of full readiness for both the August 1 mock accreditation exercise and the upcoming election.
Amupitan reiterated key operational mandates to local staff, directing that Registration Area Centres (RACs) be activated by midday on Friday prior to the election and that all personnel and materials arrive at polling units by 7:30 am to guarantee voting opens promptly at 8:30 am.
Staff integrity and professional ethics
The visit to Obokun followed an address by the INEC Chairman to Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) undergoing training at Ataoja School of Science in Osogbo.
Addressing the trainees, Amupitan warned against material diversion and political inducement, emphasizing that the ad-hoc staff represent the public face of the commission.
“What you are doing is service to the nation. For Nigerians to appreciate you, you must ensure the polls start early and that you follow the rules strictly,” Amupitan said, urging officers to ignore any instructions outside the official manual.
Highlighting Osun as the final off-cycle governorship election before the 2027 general elections, the INEC chief called for a peaceful process and proposed performance rewards for SPOs who perform exceptionally well during the poll.
