A political group has condemned former PDP deputy chairman Chief Olabode George following his criticism of a court ruling involving the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Democratic Front (TDF) described Chief George’s accusations against the judiciary as “reckless, unfounded, and an attempt at blackmail.”
The controversy follows a Court of Appeal judgement that upheld an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing state congresses organized by the ADC.
Internal rift sparks legal clash
In a joint statement issued by Chairman Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Chief Wale Adedayo, the group argued that judges acted strictly as constitutional arbiters in response to a suit filed by aggrieved party members.
According to the TDF, the legal dispute stemmed from internal mismanagement within the ADC:
- Tenure Disruption: The group accused party leadership of abruptly terminating state executive committees before the end of their official tenure.
- Disregard for Process: It claimed the party’s current crisis was triggered by a disregard for constitutional guidelines governing political parties in Nigeria.
- Court Intervention: The group maintained that the appellate court ruling was designed to uphold the rule of law against internal party overreach.
‘Greed and desperation’
The TDF rejected claims by opposition politicians that the judiciary was conspiring against rival parties, placing the blame instead on internal power struggles.
“In our view, it is the greed and desperation for power by politicians in the opposition that is solely responsible for the crisis currently rocking opposition parties, not the judiciary,” the statement read.
The group urged the public to disregard attacks on judicial institutions, emphasizing that members of political parties retain the fundamental right to seek legal redress when party constitutions are breached.
