Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year, making him the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history.
Rogers will undergo a medical on Monday following his return from international duty at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The mega-deal sets a new transfer record for an English player, narrowly eclipsing the £116m fee Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. It also surpasses the previous £107m Chelsea record spent on Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Windfall for Middlesbrough
The transfer represents a massive financial coup for Rogers’ former club, Middlesbrough.
- The Initial Deal: Villa signed Rogers from the Championship side in February 2024 for an initial £8m, which eventually rose to £15m.
- The Sell-on Clause: Middlesbrough negotiated a 20% profit-share clause into that deal.
- The Payout: Because of the massive price increase, Boro will pocket at least £20.4m from the Stamford Bridge move—a figure the club believes is an English record for a transfer sell-on fee.
Alonso’s marquee signing
The high-profile acquisition is a major statement of intent from new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as he rebuilds the squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Rogers enjoyed a stellar stint under Unai Emery at Villa Park, scoring 21 goals in 85 league appearances and helping the club lift the Europa League trophy last season. His performances earned him a regular spot in the national team, where he has won 21 senior caps for England, including six appearances at this summer’s World Cup.
Villa’s midfield rebuild
Rogers becomes the second high-profile midfielder to leave Aston Villa this week, following Youri Tielemans’ £35m switch to Manchester United.
However, Villa have moved quickly to reinvest the windfall. The club has completed a £50m-plus deal for Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg and has lined up a £38m move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
