Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria has offered its condolences to Ghana following devastating floods that have killed at least 12 people and caused widespread destruction across the West African nation. Torrential rainfall over recent days has submerged large parts of the country, including the capital, Accra. The deluge has displaced thousands of residents, destroyed critical infrastructure, and cut off key livelihoods.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the federal government was “profoundly saddened by this tragic loss of life and the immense hardship being endured.””Nigeria stands in solidarity with the government and people of Ghana during this period of mourning,” said ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, those who sustained injuries, and all those whose homes have been adversely affected.”The Nigerian government also praised the “swift response” of Ghanaian emergency services, security forces, and volunteers who are currently leading rescue and recovery operations in the worst-hit areas.
Regional Vulnerability
West African nations have faced increasingly erratic and severe weather patterns in recent years, with climate experts warning that rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage systems leave cities like Accra highly vulnerable to flash flooding.Officials in Ghana are still assessing the full scale of the economic and structural damage, while weather forecasts indicate further rain could be on the way.
Nigeria expressed confidence that the “resilience, solidarity, and determination of the Ghanaian people” would see the country through its recovery.
