Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police has ordered senior commanders to adopt proactive, intelligence-driven tactics to combat an evolving wave of violent crime across the country.
Olatunji Disu gave the directive during a monthly review conference with top police officials at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
The police chief noted that the country continues to grapple with complex security threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, banditry, and cybercrime.
He urged regional commanders to strengthen internal discipline and step up operational coordination to stay ahead of criminal networks.
“Public trust and community partnership remain indispensable to effective policing and crime prevention,” Mr. Disu told the gathered commanders, instructing them to deepen engagement with traditional rulers, youth groups, and local associations.
The police chief also disclosed data on recent operations conducted since May. Authorities report that officers have arrested dozens of suspects, including 55 alleged kidnappers, 65 suspected armed robbers, and eight suspected terrorists.
According to police figures, 88 abducted victims were rescued during the same period, while more than 100 firearms and 800 rounds of ammunition were recovered nationwide.
In addition to operational updates, the inspector-general emphasized the need for better media engagement to counter public misinformation and improve transparency regarding policing activities.
