GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — A prominent educator and former non-profit chief executive has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for stealing $1.4m (£1.1m) intended for vulnerable preschool children.
Dr. Nkechy Ezeh, 61, the founder of the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative (ELNC) in West Michigan, was described by a federal judge as “a fraud and a thief” before being led away in handcuffs.
The sentencing marks the downfall of a woman once celebrated as a pillar of her community, having served as an associate professor of education before her systematic looting of taxpayer and donor funds was uncovered.
‘Ghost Payroll’ and Luxury Travel
Court documents revealed a “brazen and widespread” scheme where Dr. Ezeh diverted funds meant for meals, transport, and support services for low-income children to fund a lavish lifestyle.
Prosecutors detailed how the stolen money was spent on:
- International Travel: Luxury trips to Hawaii, Europe, and Africa.
- Family Events: A high-end family wedding.
- Ghost Employees: Placing relatives on the payroll who received hundreds of thousands of dollars for work they never performed.
- Foreign Transfers: Using intermediaries to move stolen cash to family members in Nigeria.
“Nkechy Ezeh’s greed is beyond reprehensible,” said US Attorney Timothy VerHey. “Instead of helping kids, she spent that money on herself.”
The Human Cost
The impact of the fraud extended far beyond the stolen ledger. In 2023, the ELNC was forced to shut down after federal and private funding was pulled, resulting in:
- The loss of preschool places for hundreds of low-income families.
- The layoff of 35 employees who served the community.
- The closure of several local nurseries that relied on the non-profit’s support.
Chief US District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou sentenced Ezeh to 70 months for the fraud, with a concurrent 60-month term for tax evasion. She was also ordered to pay $1.4m in restitution and nearly $400,000 to the US tax authorities.
A Coordinated Crackdown
The investigation, which involved the IRS and the Department of Health and Human Services, also snared the organisation’s former bookkeeper, Sharon Killebrew. Killebrew was previously sentenced to 54 months for her role as a co-conspirator.
Authorities say the case serves as a stark warning to those managing federal grants. For the families of West Michigan, however, the sentence offers cold comfort for the vital early childhood services that vanished along with the stolen millions.
