Nigeria to launch major clean energy transport hub in Kano

Nigeria is set to take a significant step in its transition toward sustainable energy with the launch of the Northern Corridor Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) Programme in Kano on Thursday. The initiative, led by the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), aims to introduce cheaper and cleaner transport alternatives to Northern Nigeria.

In a statement on Tuesday, Onyekachi Eke, the initiative’s head of brand and communications, said the programme is designed to drive the adoption of green infrastructure across the region. The move comes as the Nigerian government faces increasing pressure to provide relief from the rising costs of traditional fuels. By pivoting to CNG and electric power, officials hope to reduce the country’s long-standing dependence on petrol and diesel.

What to expect from the launch

The event, scheduled for May 14, will serve as a gathering point for government officials, private investors, and transport industry leaders.

Key activities include:Asset Commissioning: The formal unveiling of new CNG refuelling stations and EV charging points.

Live Demonstrations: Showcasing clean mobility technology already being integrated into Nigeria’s national grid..

Stakeholder Collaboration: Discussions focused on building a sustainable “ecosystem” for alternative fuels in the north.

The shift to ‘Green’ transport

Nigeria has been aggressively pursuing gas-powered solutions following the removal of its decades-old fuel subsidy. While the transition faces challenges—including the high cost of vehicle conversion and the need for widespread charging infrastructure—the Kano launch represents a strategic effort to decentralise these solutions beyond the commercial capital of Lagos. Organisers believe that by establishing a “Northern Corridor,” they can significantly lower logistics costs for traders and commuters, potentially easing the inflationary pressures currently felt across the West African nation.
