Ghanaian Passport Climbs Global Rankings Following ‘Significant Recovery’

ACCRA, Ghana — The Ghanaian passport has surged 16 places in the global rankings since 2021, according to the latest data from the 2026 Henley Passport Index.

Ghana now holds the 11th strongest passport in Africa and is ranked 68th globally. The recovery marks a notable turnaround for the West African nation, which hit a record low of 84th in the global rankings just five years ago.

Expanding Global Access

The index reveals that Ghanaian citizens can now travel to approximately 67 destinations worldwide either visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival.

While the passport reached a historic high of 53rd in 2006, the recent upward trend is being viewed by officials as a return to form. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed the rise to “dynamic leadership,” adding that they aim to restore the passport to the “top in the foreseeable future.”

The ECOWAS Factor

A core strength of the Ghanaian travel document remains the country’s membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This regional affiliation provides:

  • Freedom of Movement: Unrestricted travel and residency rights across the 12 member states of the West African sub-region.
  • Global Mobility: Access to a growing list of international partners offering simplified entry requirements.

The Global Picture

The Henley Passport Index, which ranks documents based on the number of destinations holders can access without a prior visa, is widely considered the standard for global mobility.

Experts suggest that Ghana’s climb is reflective of improving diplomatic ties and a stable political environment, which often encourages other nations to ease entry restrictions. Despite the gains, Ghana still trails continental leaders such as Seychelles and Mauritius, which traditionally dominate the African rankings.
