Nigeria’s INEC to Launch Final Phase of Voter Registration

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will enter its third and final phase on Monday, 11 May 2026.

The exercise was previously suspended in mid-April to allow officials to clean up the register following a period of public claims and objections. This final window is seen as a critical opportunity for millions of eligible Nigerians to secure their right to vote ahead of future polls.

Key Deadlines for Voters

The commission has provided a strict timeline for citizens to ensure their details are captured:

  • Resumption Date: The final registration phase begins on Monday, 11 May 2026.
  • Closing Date: Registration will officially end on Friday, 10 July 2026.
  • Public Scrutiny: The register will be displayed for claims and objections from 23 July to 29 July 2026.

Who Needs to Register?

INEC official Mohammed Kudu Haruna confirmed that the exercise is open to several categories of citizens:

  • New Voters: Any citizen who has attained the age of 18 since the last registration period.
  • Unregistered Citizens: Those who were unable to participate in the first two phases of the CVR.
  • Card Replacements: Registered voters who need to replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
  • Data Updates: Individuals wishing to transfer their registration or correct errors in their personal information.

How to Access the Service

In an effort to streamline the process, the commission is encouraging the use of digital tools. Applicants can access a dedicated online portal or visit any of the commission’s state and local government area offices nationwide.

The commission has reassured the public that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth exercise. Officials emphasized that public scrutiny of the register remains an “important opportunity” to ensure the accuracy and credibility of the electoral foundation.
