A motorist has been remanded in custody for two weeks after a violent assault left a road safety official with serious injuries in Abuja.
The incident, which occurred at the ECWA Junction in the Karu area on Thursday morning, has sparked a fresh warning from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) over the safety of its personnel. The attacker, identified as Abdulkadri Adamu, was stopped by a patrol team while driving an overloaded Nissan Almera.
Violent struggle
According to the FRSC, Mr. Adamu refused to comply with traffic directives and “violently engaged” the patrol team leader. During the struggle, the driver is said to have lifted the officer and forcefully thrown him to the ground. The official was rushed to a nearby medical facility in Karu for emergency treatment.”The officer has since regained consciousness but is undergoing further evaluation for injuries, including suspected fractures,” the Corps said in a statement.
‘Full weight of the law’
Following the attack, members of the public intervened to help apprehend Mr. Adamu before handing him over to the police. Appearing in court shortly after, the driver did not deny the charges. The presiding judge ordered him to be remanded for two weeks, with the term set to end on 23 April. The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, condemned the “rising trend” of violence against his staff.” Any act of aggression against FRSC personnel will be met with the full weight of the law,” Mr Mohammed warned. He urged motorists to cooperate with officers, reminding the public that their role is to “save lives and ensure safer highways.”
