Nigeria’s electoral body recognizes Wike-backed faction in major blow to PDP rivals

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized a new leadership team for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effectively handing control to a faction loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The electoral umpire updated its official website on Monday, listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as the National Chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary. The move follows a contentious national convention held on Sunday night at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The decision is seen as a significant victory for Mr. Wike, who has been locked in a bitter, years-long struggle with rival party blocs for the “soul” of the country’s former ruling party.

A ‘Consensus’ Coup

The new 21-member National Working Committee (NWC) was affirmed through a consensus process after the party’s previous caretaker committee was dissolved. By updating its portal to reflect these names, INEC has provided the Abuja-based faction with the “stamp of legality” it needs to manage party affairs ahead of the 2027 elections.

Key members of the newly recognized leadership include:

  • National Chairman: Abdulrahman Mohammed
  • National Secretary: Anyanwu Samuel
  • Deputy National Chairmen: Aaron Chukwuemeka (South) and Yusufu Akirikwen (North)
  • National Publicity Secretary: Jungudo Mohammed

Analysis: The ‘Validation’ War

For months, the PDP has been a party of two halves, with a rival bloc of governors previously attempting to install their own leadership in a separate exercise in Ibadan. By recognizing the Abuja convention, INEC has signaled that it views the Wike-led process as the one that followed due process and the party’s own constitution.

However, the “legal war” is far from over. A rival group of PDP governors has already approached the Supreme Court to challenge the validity of the Abuja convention. If the apex court eventually rules against the Wike-backed team, INEC may be forced to perform another embarrassing U-turn on its website.

The 2027 Implications

The recognition of the Mohammed-led NWC is a tactical masterstroke for the pro-Wike camp. This committee will now oversee the selection of candidates for upcoming legislative and gubernatorial races and, eventually, the 2027 presidential primary.

With the “official” machinery of the party now firmly in the hands of the Abuja faction, the rival “governors’ bloc” faces a stark choice: negotiate a peace deal with Mr. Wike or risk being frozen out of the party they once controlled.
