Nigerian group slams opposition ‘ignorance’ over budget rollover

A political pressure group has hit out at the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing its leadership of a “worrisome” lack of understanding regarding national budgeting. The Democratic Front (TDF) said it was surprised that a party with experienced administrators in its ranks would describe the federal government’s decision to carry over 2025 capital projects into the 2026 fiscal year as “fiscal confusion.”The row centers on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s plan to roll over 70% of the 2025 capital budget. While the opposition views this as a sign of economic instability, the TDF insists it is a masterstroke for national development.

Politics over policy’

In a statement led by Chairman Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Wale Adedayo, the TDF argued that the move is designed to end the “scourge of abandoned projects” that has plagued Nigeria for decades.”The rollover was clearly understood and well-commended by economic experts,” the statement read. “It is a significant move that will promote continuity in federal government spending.”The group took particular aim at the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi. They expressed “disappointment” that a former cabinet member would fail to appreciate how abandoned infrastructure projects have historically hampered the country’s growth.

The reality of the numbers

The TDF urged the opposition to look at the global economic factors affecting Nigeria’s purse strings, citing fluctuations in revenue generation, shortfalls in crude oil production, and volatility in global crude oil Prices.

The group argued these factors, which are largely outside of the government’s direct control, make a budget rollover a pragmatic necessity rather than a “confused” policy.”Leaders of the opposition should realise that not everything is politics. Jumping into the public space with criticisms without a proper understanding of the issues… confirms a desperation for power without knowledge of governance.”

Eyes on 2027

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the TDF suggested the ADC should focus on “redeeming its image” rather than attacking fiscal policies it claims the party does not understand. The Presidency has maintained that the rollover will instill “fiscal discipline” and ensure that ongoing projects are actually completed, rather than being left to rot while new ones are commissioned. The ADC has yet to respond to the latest criticisms.
