The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has been named “Governor of the Year” for his work in youth development and security by one of Nigeria’s leading media outlets. The award, conferred by Champion Newspapers Limited, marks a significant national recognition for the Governor’s first year in office. He is expected to receive the honour at a ceremony in Lagos this weekend.
Key Pillars of Recognition
The editorial board of Champion Newspapers cited two primary areas for the selection:
Youth Empowerment: The administration has introduced a series of “youth-inclusive” policies, ranging from vocational skills training to financial support for local entrepreneurs.
Regional Stability: Despite regional challenges, the Governor has been credited with strengthening local security networks and deepening collaboration with federal agencies to maintain order in the state.
A Reflection of Impact
Ismaila Isah, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, said the award was an “acknowledgment of sustained peace” and a sign that the administration’s economic policies are reaching the grassroots.”This reflects the impact of our job creation initiatives and the continuous effort to ensure Kogi remains a safe environment for social development,” Isah said in a statement. Kogi State, often described as the “Confluence State” due to its central location connecting the north and south of Nigeria, remains a strategic hub for national security and transit.
The Ceremony
The awards are part of an annual event designed to highlight leaders who have contributed to Nigeria’s national development. The 2025 ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, 14 March, at the Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos. Governor Ododo will join several other prominent Nigerians from the private and public sectors expected to be honoured at the gala.
