Nigeria’s Major Airports Launch Free Wi-Fi in New Digital Push

Passengers at Nigeria’s busiest aviation hubs are set for a digital upgrade following a new partnership between the country’s largest telecommunications provider and the federal government.

MTN Nigeria and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have announced the rollout of free, high-capacity Wi-Fi across five major international terminals. The service is now live or being deployed in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano.

The initiative was officially inaugurated at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, where officials demonstrated the high-speed connectivity at the recently commissioned Terminal 2.

Strengthening “Critical Infrastructure”

The move is part of a broader strategy to modernise Nigeria’s travel gateways. For years, international travelers in West Africa’s largest economy have called for more reliable internet access to manage digital boarding passes, arrange ground transport, and stay in touch with family upon arrival.

Speaking at the launch, representatives from both organisations emphasised that the project aims to:

Enhance passenger experience: Reducing “dead zones” in arrival and departure halls.

Boost digital inclusion: Providing seamless access to those without local SIM cards.

Modernise infrastructure: Aligning Nigerian airports with international standards found in global aviation hubs.

A Strategic Partnership

The collaboration marks a significant alignment between the private sector and government agencies to improve “critical national infrastructure.” For MTN, the move reinforces its “Ambition 2025” strategy, which focuses on leading digital solutions across Africa. While Nigeria has seen a rapid rise in mobile data penetration, fixed-line and public Wi-Fi infrastructure has traditionally lagged. Industry analysts suggest that providing high-capacity internet in high-traffic areas like airports is a key step in bridging this gap.

The nationwide rollout is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, ensuring that both domestic and international travelers remain connected from the moment they touch down.
