A federal lawmaker in south-west Nigeria has launched a humanitarian drive to provide food supplies to hundreds of low-income residents to mark the Christmas holiday.
The initiative was confirmed in a statement by Blessing Akeju, the Chief Press Secretary to the lawmaker. The distribution, led by Ifeoluwa Ehindero, took place across the Akoko North Federal Constituency in Ondo State, aimed at easing the economic burden on families during the festive season.
Speaking during the handover, Mr Ehindero described the gesture as a “reflection of the values” of the season. “Giving back to our people, especially the less privileged, is not just a duty but a shared responsibility,” he said. “We want to ensure no one is left behind as we celebrate.”

Support from traditional rulers
The event was attended by high-ranking traditional rulers, who hold significant cultural and moral authority in the region. Their presence highlighted the importance of grassroots welfare in a period where many Nigerians are facing rising living costs.
- Oba Lawrence Bamisile III, the Oloyin of Oyin Akoko, praised the move for strengthening the bond between the government and the community.
- Oba Victor Adetona, the Owa of Ogbagi Akoko, described the intervention as “timely and impactful” for his subjects.
Local political leaders from the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) also welcomed the distribution. Hon. Kehinde Obanla and Hon. Alhaji Saliu Mumuni, party chairmen for the local government areas, said the intervention demonstrated “leadership with empathy” and helped reinforce public trust.

Easing the festive burden
For many beneficiaries, the donation of food items—a practice often referred to locally as part of “social welfare” interventions—provides critical relief during a period of high inflation.
The recipients expressed gratitude, noting that the support allowed them to celebrate Christmas with their families despite financial challenges. Mr Ehindero has pledged to continue these “people-focused” programmes as part of his broader legislative agenda for the constituency.
