Thousands gather for vibrant Irreecha thanksgiving festival

Tens of thousands of Ethiopians, many dressed in vibrant traditional attire, gathered in downtown Addis Ababa this weekend for the annual Irreecha thanksgiving festival.

The Irreecha celebration is one of the most significant cultural events for the Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group. Held to mark the end of the main rainy season, the ritual involves participants traditionally congregating near sacred water bodies, such as rivers and lakes, to offer thanks to their creator for the new greenery and fertility the rains have brought.
