Japan, Africa Announce Major Cooperation Boost at Tokyo Conference

Tokyo, Japan – A significant boost in Japan-Africa relations was announced this week at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development (TICAD9), where 300 new cooperation agreements were signed. This number is three times greater than the total reached at the last summit in Tunisia in 2022.

The announcement was made during a high-level session on Thursday, attended by Angolan President João Lourenço, the current Chairperson of the African Union, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishida.

The agreements cover key development sectors critical to Africa’s growth, including infrastructure, healthcare, technology, education, and agriculture. Officials said the sharp increase in partnerships reflects Japan’s renewed commitment to long-term cooperation with African nations, and Africa’s expanding role on the global economic stage.
