Sudan: Army Denies Bombing UN Aid Convoy

KHARTOUM, SUDAN – Sudan’s army has denied responsibility for a drone strike on a World Food Programme (WFP) aid convoy in the Darfur region. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which controls the area where the attack occurred, had blamed the army for the incident on Wednesday.

According to a UN agency, a drone struck the 16-vehicle convoy in the town of Mellit, destroying three lorries. All staff members were reported safe. The WFP has called on the warring parties to respect international humanitarian law, stating, “Humanitarian staff and assets must never be a target.”

The attack is the latest in a series of assaults on humanitarian operations in the country, which has been engulfed in a civil war since a power struggle erupted between the army and the RSF in April 2023. The WFP convoy was reportedly headed to a famine-affected area near el-Fasher, a city that has been besieged by the RSF for more than a year. Both sides have been accused of using starvation as a weapon of war by obstructing aid delivery.
