Awka, Nigeria – Three police inspectors in Nigeria’s Anambra State have been detained on the orders of the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, following allegations of corruption. The officers are accused of accosting a civilian, forcibly searching their phone, and extorting money during a security patrol.
The incident was confirmed in a press statement released on Wednesday by the Anambra State Police Command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga. He stated that Commissioner Orutugu has directed the immediate commencement of internal disciplinary proceedings against the implicated officers.
“The CP, during interrogation of the Officers, frowned at the poor character exhibition of how they accosted an unsuspecting member of the public during a security patrol, forcibly searched his phone, and extorted from the victim,” the statement read.
Commissioner Orutugu reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force is a “disciplined, transparent, responsible, responsive and accountable institution” that “will never condone any form of abuse of office, corruption and sundry unprofessional conduct.”
Mr. Ikenga added that such actions are deemed unacceptable as they “negate the professional calling of the police” and “widen the trust gap between the citizens and the Force.”
This swift action by the police leadership aims to address concerns about misconduct within the force and reinforce public trust in law enforcement.
