Abuja, Nigeria – Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai (retd.), a former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s ambassador to the Benin Republic, has denied reports claiming he was attacked by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.
The denial was issued on Monday in Abuja by his spokesman, Brigadier-General Sani Usman (retd.). Gen. Usman described the reports of an attack on the general as “mischievous and utterly false.”
According to the statement, the former army chief was not attacked in any way, contrary to what had been falsely reported by some online media outlets. Gen. Usman clarified that Gen. Buratai “celebrated the Eid festivities peacefully in Abuja in the company of family, friends, and well-wishers, and he has remained within the Federal Capital Territory since then.”
He accused those circulating the “baseless rumour” of being “purveyors of fake news, individuals whose sole aim is to malign him, spread fear, confusion and misinformation.” Gen. Usman condemned the fabricators of such falsehoods, stating they were “deeply irresponsible.”
Gen. Usman also extended appreciation to “patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians, friends, associates and admirers” who expressed concern, adding that their “overwhelming show of love and support is deeply cherished.” He concluded by asserting that “truth would always prevail” over falsehoods and malicious propaganda.
