Mokwa, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has assured residents of Mokwa in Niger State of the Federal Government’s unwavering support, following devastating floods that recently swept through the community.
Speaking during a visit to the affected area on Wednesday, Senator Shettima announced an immediate federal government intervention, including a donation of ₦2 billion (approximately $1.34 million USD) and twenty trucks of grains to the community. He promised affected residents a renewed commitment to sustainable disaster management policies nationwide.

A statement from the Vice President’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, confirmed Senator Shettima’s arrival in Mokwa, where he was received by Niger State Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Yahaya Abubakar, and members of the state’s executive council.
Expressing regret over the incident, Vice President Shettima stated, “Mokwa has always stood as a vital crossroads in Nigeria’s geography and commerce. This makes your pain a shared national burden. While this disaster is devastating, it will not define you. We will rebuild.”
He conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s direct commitment to immediate action, noting that the President had ordered immediate intervention to provide succour. “Our hearts ache for the lives lost, the homes destroyed, and the livelihoods disrupted,” he added.
Beyond immediate relief, Senator Shettima outlined the government’s commitment to preventing future disasters, stressing that the Federal Government remains dedicated to addressing the ecological challenges contributing to such crises. He called for a united national response and stronger preventative measures, urging a long-term commitment to environmental resilience.
Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, represented by his deputy Yakubu Garba, expressed gratitude to the federal government for its swift response. He specifically commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its prompt physical presence and rescue missions within 24 hours of the disaster.
The Etsu Nupe, HRH Yahaya Abubakar, also thanked Vice President Shettima for his visit and President Tinubu for directing immediate interventions.
The federal delegation included the Minister of Information & National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, both of whom hail from Niger State.
