Katsina Police Arrest Suspects Attempting to Smuggle Drugs to Niger

Police in Katsina State, North West Nigeria, say they have apprehended four men attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into neighbouring Niger Republic.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 35, were arrested in Katsina on Friday, according to a statement released on Sunday by the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq.

The arrests followed what police described as “credible intelligence.”

The statement detailed that on 16th May 2025, at approximately 14:00 local time, authorities intercepted the four men at the Kofar Guga garage as they allegedly prepared to transport the drugs to Maradi in Niger.

The suspects have been identified as Aliyu Idris, 23, and Abubakar Sa’idu, 20, both from Kofar Kwaya, along with Abubakar Suleiman, 25, and Tajuddeen Umar, 35, from Sabuwar Unguwa in Katsina State.

A search of the suspects reportedly yielded five thousand (5,000) Exol tablets and 430 Tramadol tablets.

Police say the suspects confessed during questioning and claimed to have obtained the drugs from a supplier identified only as Abba, believed to be from Abuja, who is currently at large. Authorities stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the supplier.

The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, praised his officers for the arrests and reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling drug-related crime and other criminal activities in the state. He also urged the public to assist the police by reporting any suspicious behaviour.
