The administration of Governor Ahmed Ododo in Kogi State, Nigeria, has garnered widespread praise for its newly launched Annual Media Performance Report, the first of its kind for the state.
The comprehensive document, which meticulously tracks media coverage of the state government’s activities from January 2024 to January 2025, has been lauded by politicians, media professionals, and communication experts as a significant step towards greater transparency, accountability, and strategic communication in governance.
Governor Ododo himself expressed pride in the report, emphasizing its importance as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to open governance. In his introduction to the report, he highlighted the vital role of clear and accessible communication in building public trust. He stated that the report serves not only as a record of achievements but also as a crucial tool for engaging the people of Kogi in a meaningful and transparent way, ultimately aiming to build a brighter future for the state.
The Nigerian Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, also commended the initiative. He described the report as a prime example of how tracking government activities and utilizing the media can inform effective decision-making. Minister Idris emphasized that this approach would enable the government to identify the most successful platforms for communicating its initiatives and pinpoint areas needing improvement. He praised the work of the Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, and his team, expressing confidence that this initiative would lead to continued success in Kogi State’s communication strategies.
The Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Mrs. Folashade Arike Ayoade, also lauded the report’s significance in reshaping how government activities are reported in the state. She highlighted its role in proactively ensuring the media accurately reflects the government’s actions and in documenting the administration’s impact for future reference.
Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, emphasized the teamwork involved in producing the report. He noted the effective collaboration between the media team and government officials as an example of successful government communication through shared effort, expressing confidence it would enhance media practices and public engagement.
Zainab Okino, a former Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Chairperson of the Editorial Board of Blueprint Newspapers, described the report as a historic record of Governor Ododo’s impact, safeguarding the administration’s legacy for future generations and shaping the state’s communication history.
Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, a communications scholar and Registrar of Baze University in Abuja, praised the report’s innovative approach to showcasing government responsibility and achievements, calling it groundbreaking and a potential inspiration for communication professionals nationwide.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kogi State Council, Ademu Haruna, highlighted the report’s ability to facilitate productive communication between the government and the media, promoting transparency and accountability through its comprehensive analysis of the administration’s media presence.
Other key figures, including press secretaries and media publishers within Kogi State, also commended the report’s novelty, thoroughness, and its potential to improve media practices, public image, and media literacy within the state.
