Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, has announced the formation of a coalition of opposition political parties aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Mr Abubakar confirmed the coalition’s formation, stating, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.”
Background:
This announcement comes amidst a period of heightened political tension in Nigeria. The 2023 presidential election, in which Mr Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner, was hotly contested. Mr Abubakar, along with other opposition candidates, challenged the results, alleging irregularities. These challenges were ultimately unsuccessful.
Mr Abubakar has been a vocal critic of President Tinubu’s administration, particularly regarding recent events in Rivers State, where the president declared a state of emergency. Mr Abubakar and other opposition leaders have condemned this move as unconstitutional.
The formation of this coalition signals a strategic move by the opposition to unite and present a stronger challenge to the ruling APC in the upcoming 2027 election. This is not the first time that opposition coalitions have formed in Nigeria, as politicians try to unseat the ruling party.
It is yet to be seen how effective this coalition will be in the coming years. Sources and related content
