Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mojisola Meranda Resigns Amid Leadership Crisis

Mojisola Meranda has stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective immediately. Her resignation was announced during a special plenary session on Monday, where she read out her resignation letter.

Meranda’s tenure was marked by a leadership crisis that began on January 13, 2025, when former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed by two-thirds of the 40-member house due to alleged misconduct. Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, became the first female Speaker in the state, but Obasa rejected his removal, citing improper procedure and militarization of the assembly complex.

Despite the challenges, lawmakers praised Meranda’s leadership, saying she effectively led the House and fostered a positive atmosphere. Her resignation comes after a meeting with high-ranking All Progressives Congress members to address the leadership crisis.

Meranda’s resignation was accompanied by the resignation of all principal officers appointed with her. The House has commenced the process of electing a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
