A Nigerian lawmaker, Ifeoluwa Ehindero, has announced plans to advocate for a mandatory health insurance bill for media practitioners in Nigeria. Mr. Ehindero, representing Akoko North East/Northwest Federal constituency of Ondo State, emphasized the importance of journalists’ health for productivity and highlighted the occupational hazards they face.
Speaking during an event marking his first year in the National Assembly, Mr. Ehindero shared an anecdote about his secretary’s recent illness to illustrate the importance of healthcare. He expressed concern about the “carefree attitude” of some media employers towards their staff’s well-being.

He urged journalists to collaborate with him on research regarding the proposed bill, gathering information on its feasibility and potential impact. He said that a compulsory health insurance scheme would address the health-related challenges faced by media professionals.
Mr. Ehindero also spoke about his achievements over the past year, including scholarship awards for the daughter of a deceased journalist and his involvement in decongesting correctional facilities. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among lawmakers and the positive impact it can have on their constituencies. He added that efforts are underway to improve the condition of federal roads in Ondo State
