A group of vulnerable residents in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have filed a lawsuit against Minister Nyesom Wike, demanding N500 million in damages over alleged breaches of their fundamental rights.
The residents, including scavengers, beggars, and petty traders, claim they were arbitrarily arrested, detained, and harassed by security operatives acting on Wike’s directive. Their lawyer, Abba Hikima, argues that these actions constitute a violation of their rights under the Nigerian Constitution.
The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, names Wike, the Inspector-General of Police, and other top security officials as respondents. Hikima is seeking a declaration that the treatment of vulnerable citizens by the respondents constitutes inhumane and degrading treatment.
The lawyer also wants the court to order the respondents to issue a public apology and implement policies to protect the fundamental human rights of vulnerable Nigerians. The case has been adjourned until February 4 for hearing.
