Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the release of three Nigerian nationals, Hadiza Abba, Fatima Umate Malah, and Fatima Kannai Gamboi, who were arrested and prosecuted for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia. The women spent 10 months in detention before being discharged and acquitted.
According to Kimiebi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the trio’s arrest was initially linked to the discovery of cocaine on two other Nigerian nationals at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Azeez International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. However, after prolonged diplomatic and legal efforts, the women were cleared of any wrongdoing and handed over to the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Jeddah.
The three women are currently awaiting immigration processes to return to Nigeria and reunite with their families. Ambassador Muazam Nayaya, the Honourable Consul-General of Nigeria in Jeddah, received the ladies upon their release.
