Millions of Ukrainians celebrating Christmas Day were met with a devastating reality as Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on the country’s energy infrastructure. President Zelensky condemned the attack, stating that Russia made a “conscious choice” to launch the assault on a sacred holiday ¹.
The Ukrainian air force reported detecting 184 missiles and drones, with Russia targeting energy facilities using air, ground, and sea-based missiles, as well as drones. Preliminary data indicates that Ukraine’s air defence shot down 59 missiles and 54 drones, with an additional 52 drones failing to reach their targets.
The areas affected by the attack include Kharkiv, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Zhytomyr, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zaporizhia. Unfortunately, the attack has resulted in casualties, although the exact number has not been disclosed.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the attack, claiming that the “goal was achieved” and all targeted facilities were hit. The ministry stated that the strike was carried out using long-range precision weapons and strike drones on critical energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.
The attack has left many Ukrainians without power, with planned outages implemented across the country, including in parts of Kyiv. As Ukraine battles the bitter cold, attacks on power sites have become a distressing regular occurrence.
