African Storytellers Gather to Shape Continent’s Narrative

The Africa Writers Connect 2024 event brought together writers, filmmakers, and creatives to celebrate the power of storytelling in shaping Africa’s future. The gathering, in Nigeria’s capital City, Abuja, held in a spirit of collaboration and shared passion, aimed to unite African writers, foster an environment where ideas and talents can flourish, and amplify the voice of African narratives on the global stage.

In a keynote address, filmmaker Emil Garuba emphasized the transformative impact of storytelling, saying, “Stories shape beliefs, challenge systems, and inspire change. Through storytelling, we can make the invisible visible, amplifying the voices of the marginalized and sparking movements for justice.”

Mr. Garuba also highlighted the importance of preserving the authenticity of African stories while making them accessible to a broader audience. “As storytellers, we must remain rooted in our truths while embracing the universality of our human experiences,” he said.

He noted that African storytelling has evolved over time, from oral traditions to written works and now to digital platforms. “Today, African storytelling continues to evolve. It has transcended village squares and oral performances to take its place on global platforms,” Garuba said.

He cited examples of African writers and filmmakers who have made significant contributions to the global literary and cinematic landscape. “Writers like Chimamanda Adichie, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, and Chinua Achebe have illuminated the world with African experiences, while filmmakers like Ousman Sembene, Wanuri Kahiu, and Kunle Afolayan are bringing African stories to life on the big screen,” Garuba said.

The event’s convener, Praise Ukpai, welcomed guests, saying, “This gathering is more than just an event; it is a celebration of our shared stories, a platform for collaboration, and a testament to the boundless creativity that exists within our continent.”

Ms. Ukpai emphasized the importance of connection and collaboration among African writers. “The primary objective of Africa Writers Connect has always been clear: to unite African writers from diverse backgrounds, foster an environment where ideas and talents can flourish, and amplify the voice of African narratives on the global stage,” she said.

She noted that the initiative was born out of the belief that African stories matter and that through connection and collaboration, African writers can unlock the full potential of their literary heritage. “Through storytelling, we challenge stereotypes, educate the world, and inspire change. By bringing African writers together, we not only strengthen our individual crafts but also fortify our collective impact,” Ukpai said.

The event featured workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities, bringing together writers, filmmakers, and creatives to share, learn, and grow. As the African storytelling landscape continues to evolve, events like Africa Writers Connect serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of storytelling in shaping Africa’s future.
