Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has released a groundbreaking whitepaper on the framework for an Online Harms Protection Bill. Developed in collaboration with Advocacy for Policy and Innovation (API), this document aims to tackle the growing challenge of online harm in Nigeria. The whitepaper builds on insights from Nigeria’s inaugural Content Moderation and Online Safety Summit, hosted by API in July 2022. It provides context on the prevalence of online harms, highlighting the government’s efforts to propose solutions to protect citizens and children online.
Key highlights of the whitepaper include:-
Analyzing international approaches: The paper examines efforts from other jurisdictions to combat online harms, providing valuable insights for Nigeria’s framework.
Aggregated ideas for regulatory action: The whitepaper presents research-based guidance for meaningful engagement around online harms, rather than sole opinions from NITDA.
Stakeholder engagement: The document will serve as a foundation for engagement with regulators, civil society organizations, internet platforms, businesses, and the public. NITDA and API aim to spark a national conversation on online harms, contributing to the development of a comprehensive legal framework that protects Nigerian citizens while fostering a vibrant digital ecosystem. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions to theOHPwhitepaper.
