Court documents filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have linked former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to a massive Abuja property containing 753 duplexes and other apartments.
The EFCC, which recovered the property on Monday, described it as the largest single recovery in its history. The agency obtained a court order on December 2nd to seize the 150,500 square meter estate located in Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja.
The EFCC alleges that Emefiele, along with associates, used the property for “monumental fraud” and received kickbacks from foreign exchange allocations and CBN contracts. The agency believes the property was acquired with proceeds from these illegal activities.
Emefiele is currently facing multiple charges, including procurement fraud, forgery, and alleged fraud involving billions of naira. He is also accused of approving the printing of excessive amounts of currency.
The EFCC’s investigation revealed that the property was originally intended for mass housing but was diverted for personal gain. Three companies were used to purchase the property for a total of N2.2 billion.
While the EFCC has not publicly named the owner of the property, it defended its decision to conceal the identity, citing legal procedures and ongoing investigations.
